Athletics

The University of New Brunswick proudly offers a mix of varsity and club sports, as well as many recreational activities, which take place on the university's two main campuses. At UNB, there's something for everyone, even if you just want to watch great competitive sports.

Fredericton Campus

The Varsity Reds men's hockey team has won the CIS national championship twice in the last three years.

The UNB Fredericton Varsity Reds have teams that compete in men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's volleyball, women's volleyball, men's hockey and swimming. The Varsity Reds compete in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) league.

In 2008-2009, the Varsity Reds had teams compete in six national championships, with the men's hockey team bringing home the CIS national championship for the second time in three years.

UNB Fredericton's varsity student-athletes don't just do well on the field; many also excel academically. Nearly a third of student-athletes from the Fredericton campus received the prestigious standing of CIS Academic All-Canadian each year. This award is granted to students who have maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 80 per cent or higher for one year while playing on a varsity team.

In addition to its varsity teams, UNB Fredericton also has a number of competitive club teams through its campus recreation program. These programs range from cheerleading and dance to baseball, rugby and judo.

Varsity Red student-athletes are also active contributors to the community. Student-athletes from UNB Fredericton have worked with over 5,500 local children through the Read with the Reds and Heads up With the Reds programs.

Saint John Campus

The Saint John Seawolves compete with the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association (CCAA).The Seawolves varsity teams compete in men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's volleyball and women's volleyball.

In 2008-2009, the men's volleyball team brought home the Atlantic regional championship.

The Seawolves varsity teams regularly compete in regional championships, with several teams competing at the national level. Seawolves players have won a number of national awards over the past few years.

Kelcie Levesque, a member of UNBSJ's soccer and volleyball teams, is UNB Saint John's most recent Academic All-Canadian. She was recently recognized by the CCAA for her achievements during the 2008-2009 season.

In addition to its varsity teams, UNB Saint John's campus recreation program also has several competitive sports clubs and intramural teams, ranging from aikido to hockey and softball.

Varsity athletes at UNB Saint John give back to the community by helping local youth through the popular Howl with the Wolves program, which encourages kids to become interested in sports and physical activity. The program was designed by Seawolves coaches and athletes.
